Not everyone has pride in Helensville
“Helensville is a mix of go-ahead town and heritage charm.”
http://www.wheretoliveinauckland.co.nz/
”Why Helensville? A relaxed and unpretentious small town with a scent of the sea and pine forest. It offers history, adventure and scenic pieces.”
On Holiday Magazine

MOTV8N for success
In the next 6 months I am going to run you through the basics of what you need to know to keep motivated and move towards your dreams and goals in life.  Success is for all of us, and as soon as we adapt that mindset, we tend to attract different circumstances in our lives.  If we wake up and say “its raining again, its cold, another miserable day”, that is more than likely what we will attract.    Winter can be a dreary time, but it can also be a time of planting seeds for summer.  What would you like to do being next summer?  What would you like to be doing in the next lot of holidays you have? What would you like to start doing NOW?  Whatever that vision is, make it happen.  Think of something you would love to achieve (whether you believe it is possible for you or not), close your eyes and visualise you doing that one thing.  What would you see?  What would it feel like? What would you hear?  When goal setting, a great strategy to use is visualisation, because even though it is not real, your brain has had a glimpse of what it would be like to have already achieved that goal.

Helensville Lions Colourful Ceremony
In honour of incoming President Matt Hampton’s recent nuptials in Fiji, Installing Officer Pen Coster conducted a hilarious Change of Officers with the theme of a “Fijian Wedding”.  No Kava was served but everything else was in Fijian style

Oldest Lion in N.Z.?
John Ewart Old was born in Taranaki 9th September 1913. He joined Te Awamutu Lions Club as a Charter Member in 1961. When he moved to Helensville in 1967 to manage the A.N.Z. Bank he transferred to Helensville Club.  In 1969, the Mayor of Helensville was tragically killed in a railway accident and, as Club President, John was instrumental in raising the funds to provide the town with a much needed Ambulance and Ambulance Station, which was officially opened by the Governor General Sir Arthur Porritt.

The History of the Helensville Volunteer Fire Brigade
The last couple of weeks have been tough for members of the Brigade. We have had to deal with a couple of fatalities that have involved young people; and that is always hard. At times like this the members have to support each other, but there is outside professional help available if it is needed. It does help having the knowledge that our training and equipment is good and that we can look back at the job that we did and know that it was done well.

Flying with Manu Tukutuku
As part of the Auckland regional Matariki festival calendar of events Haranui Marae in collaboration with the Otakanini Topu and Auckland Council hosted the ‘first’ kite day in South Kaipara. Fortunately the weather behaved, as there were moments of pure blue skies to over cast conditions but most of all ‘Tawhirimatea’ god of the wind was present. Large display kites provided by Peter Lynn Kites based in Christchurch lit up the skies with a large stingray and life-sized whale. Plus Kiteworks, Malcolm Hubbert and Peter Clarke all from Auckland and Rotorua flew their ‘family’ of kites. “It was great to see the kite community support our first kite event says Mei Hill - Event Organiser. It was great to receive their feedback…, as the Otakanini Topu was one of the best sites they have flown out for a very long time. The local whanau from Haranui Marae and surrounding area were able to fly their own kites and marvel at the large ones. A judging panel consisting of two, local Kaumatua Frank Bowater and Allie Blanchard (Matariki Festival staff member) managed to find the three best kites on the day and they were rewarded with Westfield Shopping Mall gift vouchers. First prize went to local Taryn Stead-Hill and runners up Hare Kawiti and Maria Foreman. A workshop to make kites was offered on Saturday by Kris Kell (Waitakere based arts teacher) at the Haranui Marae Training centre with a dozen local whanau attending and included mums, nana’s and one dad - turning up to support their kids. Local feedback from whanau was that it was an awesome kaupapa and a positive community event, which has the potential to grow into a regional event. I look forward to speaking with the Haranui Marae, the Otakanini Topu and community members to see how; working together can make this event happen again.

After The Quake – The Silent Auction
Two works by Helensville blind artist Francis Ritchie are being auctioned at the Helensville Art Centre on Karaka Street. 2/3rds of the money raised will go to Christchurch through the Red Cross and the Blind Foundation to help quake victims. Francis, who lost his sight four years ago, has family in Christchurch and is only too aware of how difficult it can be to move around and locate things at the best of times, let alone after an earthquake has thrown them everywhere and anywhere.

Artisan Market and Variety Afternoon
Old-fashioned home grown entertainment was the name of the game at the Art Stop Café on Sunday when it hosted the monthly Artisan Market and Variety Afternoon.  A mixture of poets, musicians and Story tellers came together to delight the 30 plus people crammed happily into the café’s main area (several others enjoyed hanging out in the café’s upper area with the performances simply as ‘background’). Artisan stallholders sold a variety of goodies such as weird and wonderful fabric creatures, creepy ant bracelets and crochet cloche hats.

News from the Art Centre
There was a really good turn out for the official opening of the Panels that were created by local community groups and individuals. The sponsors and prizewinners are all acknowledged in the labeling of each panel.

Vets Corner - Winter Pet Health
The winter has finally arrived with colder southerly winds and rain.  From your pets point of view this has a couple of impacts.  The cats just move indoors more and sit in front of the heater.  This is great for them, and their fleas!  By moving into a warmer environment they take their fleas with them, and the rate of flea breeding is temperature dependant.  This means that the fleas do not die out over the winter as you might expect, so you need to keep up with the flea control.  Another factor is that as you and the cat interact more because you are both inside you will notice presence of the fleas more (more bites).

Education

Kaukapakapa School Tree Planting
Our Year 8 students assisted with planting native trees at the reserve by the Kaukapakapa River last week. This came about because of a grant from the Kaukapakapa Reunion Committee and the Councils input as well. This reserve area was first planted 21 years ago by the then senior students or our school and their teacher, Tony Westrupp, our current principal. Since then it has become a popular picnic area

Graham Braddock visited Kaukapakapa School
On May 31st Graham Braddock visited Kaukapakapa School taking all students through his Fun With Portraits Art Workshop.

South Kaipara Youth Forum

The Helensville Women & Family Centre
The Helensville Women & Family Centre represented by Kerri Babbington & Michaela Salmon with the support of Nicola Reid, Youth Development Facilitator – Auckland Council, Josephine Palmer, South Kaipara Youth Forum, and Pauline Mee, Kaipara Art Centre presented this years Youth Week activity at Kaipara College’s Whare Ako on 26th May, as part of the National Youth Week 2011 celebration. This years theme was Step Up, Be Heard, Take Responsibility and Be Youth. The students who shared in the celebration held during lunch time were the 2011 Wahine Rangatira – student support group and the Year 13 Peer Support Leaders. Each of the presenters spoke about their organisations and services that are available to the students. Pauline facilitated an art activity that celebrated being ‘Wahine’ and there was a pop quiz to keep enthusiasm high. Each student participant was presented with a Care Pack filled with information and goodies that supported self care, health and wellbeing. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their generosity and support this project:

Letters to the Editor

Waitoki School
On behalf of the Executive of the Helensville Pioneer Museum I would like to thank all those who made it possible for moving the old 1939 Waitoki School from its grounds to its present site on the Museum grounds in Helensville. To do this it needed a combined effort from many. First a big thank you must go to Hans Van Duyn and Dianne from Eurovision House Movers and their crew for helping organize and the transporting of the building from Waitoki to Helensville free of any charges.
